ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: A.P.POLO - NFT SCAMMER 002
A.P.Polo - "NFT Scammer 002" - Hamburg (Germany). The rapid growth of the non-fungible token (NFT) market has produced profiteers of all stripes - unfortunately also fraudsters who take advantage of the often rather limited IT knowledge of many players in the NFT field in order to access their assets with sophisticated fraud scenarios. Social media such as Instagram, Facebook, etc. not only serve as welcome platforms, e.g. for artists, to quickly make their own works known to many potential customers. They offer fraudsters the chance - free of charge and almost unlimited - to use a fraud scenario once they have been developed almost as often as they like - until the fraud method has become so well known that the reduced number of possible victims is no longer attractive. If we look back to 2012, coloured coins were the first hint of what we now know as non-fungible tokens. Ten years later, these blockchain-based assets, which can be pretty much anything, are all the rage, especially in the world of art, sports and video games. The NFT market began to take off in 2020, growing by more than 300% year-on-year and moving millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies. However, in the first week of May 2022, sales of these tokens fell 92% to 19,000 from their peak of 225,000 last September. The number of active wallets fell by 88% to around 14,000 from 119,000 in November. However, thousands to millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies are still being traded on the market, providing many opportunities for fraudsters and leading to major concerns about the security of this asset. To steal a work of art, a thief used to have to overcome several barriers and cameras in a museum; today, a digital wallet can be cracked using malware or social engineering techniques. It is quite difficult to determine exact figures on how much money has been lost through fraud with NFTs. However, the figures reported by the largest NFT marketplace OpenSea are interesting. According to them, 80% of all unique tokens created via the platform's free NFT tool are nothing more than scams. These are frightening figures and show that NFT scams are profitable. As previously mentioned, the types of fraud in this context are quite diverse. When digital artist Qing Han died in 2020, scammers seized the opportunity and sold her artworks as NFTs in her name. In September 2021, the website of well-known graffiti artist Banksy was hacked and an advert was placed for the sale of what was supposedly his first NFT; a collector paid 336,000 dollars. The lack of regulation of the NFT market makes it a place of opportunity for all kinds of scams. Several companies, such as Adobe, are trying to develop "authentication stamps" that make it easier to verify the legitimacy of a token. Despite some barriers to fraud prevention, it is a fast-moving area that relies heavily on user behaviour. Below are some common NFT scams you should be aware of and tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. There is a growing number of artists who have little experience in the crypto world, but who can hardly resist the temptation to generate unexpectedly high proceeds with their artworks as NFT. Fraudsters shamelessly exploit this and use various scams to rip unsuspecting artists over the table. The "normal" case someone was offered a large sum for their picture published on Instagram - on the condition that it would be mined and offered on a special NFT marketplace. Great caution is required here and it is advisable to check the Internet address of the required marketplace carefully before embarking on such an adventure away from the standard marketplaces such as OpenSea, Rarible, Foundation etc. A quick check, e.g. with the Scamadvisor, can save you from the worst. There is a growing number of artists who would like to mint their works as NFT, since they have already received excellent offers from allegedly interested parties in the social networks or directly by e-mail. The scams that may be practiced here are different, but are currently particularly efficient, multi-level concepts. The inexperienced artist is offered the opportunity to mint the desired NFTs. If an artist has published works, e.g. on Instagram, he unexpectedly receives a message from a prospective buyer who would like to buy two of his exhibited works as NFT. Purchase sums per NFT in the five-digit euro range are also offered. If the artist agrees, but has no knowledge of NFT, mints, etc., he is also offered the opportunity to produce the NFTs - for four-digit euro amounts. If the artist agrees, the fraudulent prospect is off with the amount paid. Another method is to lure the artist to an NFT counterfeit marketplace. An artist is again offered high purchase prices on Instagram or Facebook to purchase the NFTs of two of her published artworks. The tone of the messages is extremely friendly and respectful. If the buyer accepts and asks for details, she will be given a marketplace where she should mint her NFTs. This marketplace looks deceptively real and the possible fraud can only be recognized at this point with the appropriate level of knowledge. Discord has a certain appeal to cybercriminals as it offers a wide range of opportunities to defraud users. The platform is divided into communities, known as servers, where people can chat, stream and play games together. In December 2021, 373 members of a Discord server operated by the recently launched gaming NFT marketplace Fractal were scammed out of their digital wallets' authentication credentials, losing $150,000 worth of Solana. Other ways to get scammed on Discord include sending direct messages (DMs) that trick users into believing they are actually being contacted by a brand, artist or influencer. The larger a Discord network is, the more likely you are to receive fraudulent messages. You should be careful when clicking on links sent by strangers or when you receive requests for money. Also, don't be tempted by new NFT opportunities or projects without checking whether the offer is legitimate. Users of social media such as Twitter, Facebook & Co. must constantly be on the lookout for possible fake profiles. These are often copies of real profiles that can be recognised with a little attention - sometimes a single letter is enough to expose a fraudster. At the same time, bots or criminals use social media to interact with users and request information or grant access to cryptocurrencies. Even if the scammers are not always successful, a small percentage of successful hauls can mean big payouts. In addition, cybercriminals may try to reach users by sending messages pretending to chat to them or ask for advice. A number of red flags can be used to recognise a fraudster, e.g. the number of followers, the number of tweets and retweets or whether the account lacks original content. Another common tactic is copying websites and apps from completely legitimate brands. Imitations of NFT marketplaces or cryptocurrencies are spread on Discord, Twitter and forums, as well as via email. The level of similarity to the real companies is impressive, and it takes a keen eye to spot small differences in the URL or general layout. For this reason, it is always important to check the URL of a link before clicking on it, especially if the websites ask for personal details. We should always remember the golden rule and never share seed phrases or passwords with anyone outside of our NFT wallets. Once you have verified that the website is genuine, the next step is to verify the authenticity of an NFT. Check the seller's background and previous sales, but also make sure the NFT is original and not being sold on other markets, especially when buying expensive and in-demand crypto. Speaking of expensive, suspiciously low prices should always make you sit up and take notice, as scammers tend to sell copies cheaply. Aside from Banksy and his story with the scam website, other artists have also found themselves in similar situations. Tyler Hobbs, the artist behind the Art Blocks project "Fidenza", denounced the platform SolBlocks for using his code to sell replicas of his works. Derek Laufman's artworks were also sold from a fake account under the artist's name and were even given a "Verified" symbol. The list of similar scams is long and prompted artists to take action by commenting on and publicly denouncing fake profiles for the unauthorised sale of their art. The "pump-and-dump" scam, which is the closest to NFT speculation, involves an individual or group of individuals buying a large number of NFTs (or cryptocurrencies) and selling them back to themselves to artificially create the perception that the asset is in high demand. This increases resale profits. On the buy side, this scheme seems to be confirmed in parallel by influencers who share the NFT on their profiles, making it appear to be a great opportunity. Ultimately, buyers expect to be able to resell at a higher price, which never happens as the scammers clean up their tracks after receiving their money. The "rug pull" scam is a typical crypto scam that the NFT market has adopted. Rug pulls are quite common and benefit from their main characteristic: by the time the scam is uncovered, it's usually too late. As with pump-and-dump scams, the scammers advertise a project, solicit investment and then abandon it without notice. This usually happens when they believe they have fully exhausted the investors. They then withdraw all funds from an NFT wallet and delete their profiles from marketplaces and social media. One of the most famous cases goes back to "Squid Game" and the cryptocurrency "Squid" inspired by the TV series. This token rose to a value of USD 2,800 within a few weeks until it suddenly disappeared. All social media accounts and the website disappeared without a trace. It is assumed that the fraudsters stole 3.3 million dollars in this way.
